Language Arts Information

Language Arts is a complex study and has 6 major components that we will be working on throughout each week.

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking and Listening
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Word Work

The beginning of the year will focus on building our reading stamina, identifying fictional story elements, responding to literature, narrative writing, reviewing the kinds of nouns & verbs, building word awareness and spelling patterns, and exploring the idea of identity – who we are, where we came from, what we are good at, and what we need to work on in the future.

Students are expected to read 20 min. every day on their own to practice their reading skills, learn new words, and experience good writing.  Students should be reading a Good Fit Book - as discussed in class - mainly on their own, but may also explore audio books or read with a parent/sibling during the week to mix it up and build good reading habits.  Additional resources to books and reading material can be found below and through the DMS Library Website.

The following vocabulary will be covered...stamina, “Good Fit Book,” genre, setting, character, trait, conflict, theme, plot, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

In 5th grade, Social Studies is focused around the theme of “Perspectives.”  We examine multiple points of view within the 4 parts of Social Studies:

Geography

Economics

History

Government

We are starting the year with an overview of each of these components and then will focus on Geography, Map Skills, and the idea that “Maps Tell A Story.”  The following vocabulary will be covered...geography, region, political & physical map, climate, resources, legend, compass rose, longitude, latitude, Equator, Prime Meridian, absolute location, relative location, timeline, and chronological order.
