General Music

General music exposes our students to a wide variety of musical experiences.  Throughout four years in the middle school, Mr. Leaf, Ms. Tourigny, and Mr. Tromba will facilitate learning through a variety of courses like America's Music, Music Theater, Songwriting, Keyboarding, Guitar and Music Production.

Band

Welcome to the Dover Middle School Band.  We recognize the many options students and parents have when considering educational opportunities here at DMS and would like to thank you for making band part of your learning this year. I am energized and thankful for the opportunity to work with such incredible young people.  DMS Music has the tradition of a quality program with a rich musical history and we are very excited about building and continuing to celebrate that fine tradition.

Band is a year long course designed to provide students with an enriching and diverse instrumental music education by performing music of various genres and time periods. The class will perform two to three concerts during the year to demonstrate their learning. The daily objective of the course is to foster and promote music growth through the playing of an instrument by the student, at an appropriate level of difficulty. Band is not like other classes nor are they exactly like team sports or clubs. Instead, they possess characteristics of both: (a) music classes are similar to other classes in that there are concepts and skills that must be learned through a definite curriculum, and (b) they are similar to team sports in that success depends on all individuals performing their parts and relating with others as teammates in a cooperative and supportive spirit.

Performance Based Learning & Assessment

“In the act of learning, people obtain content knowledge, acquire skills, and develop work habits – and practice the application of all three… Performance-based learning and assessment represent a set of strategies for the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and work habits through the performance of tasks that are meaningful and engaging to students.” Ct. Regional school district 15

Performance based learning and assessment will utilize many forms of assessment with the purpose of collecting data to identify strengths and weaknesses and ultimately improve student performance.
Evaluation is using the assessments to make decisions and judgments on the quality, value, or work of a response, product or performance.  Grades answer questions like:
- Does this performance represent the student’s best work?
- How does this performance compare to the previous performance made by the student?
- How does this performance compare to other performances made by other students?

Songwriting - General Music

Songwriting is a rewarding form of expression. This class provides young students with basic tools to “unlock the secrets” of harmony, melody, song form and lyric writing. Entry level piano/ keyboarding will be introduced as well as  https://www.hooktheory.comHookpad a cloud based music software. In combination, these tools will act as a sketchpad for an easier more intuitive method of discovering and building sounds that work for the writer in their own ever-developing style of music.

This class is essentially project based in that students will primarily demonstrate understanding of the course standards through the creation and performance of original song material and tasks. As this is a beginning class, students will need to spend some time understanding the vocabulary of music and the basics of how music works.
